According to the UN Report "The Human Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident: A Strategy for Recovery" published in 2002, in Belarus, the overall contaminated area is 46,450 square km or about 23 per cent of the country land [3]. The polluted territory was then a densely inhabited area in Belarus with more than 3600 settlements, including 27 towns, that were home to 2,2 mln residents. [3].In Belarus, over 2 million people were directly affected by the disaster, including over 135,000 people who had to resettle outside of the contaminated areas. Some 1,650,000 people continued to live in contaminated areas, including 344,000 children [3]. Every fifth Belarusian, including over half a million children, was affected by the consequences of the nuclear accident [4].
