The hoat danced madly over the waves. It looked as if nothing could stop it from going on the rocks. The crew worked desperately. With a do-or-die effort they turned the boat from the rocky shore and headed for the open waters.
So, through no fault of their own, the four Soviet soldiers who made up the crew found themselves in the stormy Pacific.
The day before, on January 17, 1960, a violent storm had broken out in (he Kuriles. Soviet self-propelled barge No. 36 was swept out to the sea with four men on board: Junior Sergeant Ziganshin, Pop-lavsky, Kruchkovsky and Fedotov.
Boats and planes were sent in search of the missing barge. But because of the fog and snowstorm all attempts to find it failed. A tiny boat was not likely to be seen amid the huge waves.
Groups of skiers were sent along the entire coast in case the storm swept the barge back on the shore.
“T-36! T-361 Answer!” The voice over the radio sounded again and again. They heard the call but could neither answer nor turn back. Something had gone wrong with the radio transmitter and they had run out of fuel.
Snow mixed with rain blinded them, the huge waves flung the boat as if it were a toy. To make things worse there was a leak in the engine-room. Things had taken a dangerous turn.
They plugged the hole and took turns at pumping out the freezing water. Their clothes were coated with ice. Their faces and hands bled because they were flung against the.walls of the cabin. Dead tired and faint with hunger the men fought the raging storm for fifty long hours.
It was only on the fourth day that they had their first meal. The sergeant took a look af the store of Food and Fresh water: the salt sea water had ruined almost all of it. From that day they were compelled to ration their food and drink.
Meanwhile the storm raged day and night as the helpless barge drifted endlessly across the Pacific.On very rare occasions, when the sea was calmer, they tried to fish with hooks made of nails. But try as they would, they never caught a fish. Once a shark came near the boat but they (ailed to
catch it.
… February 23. They had almost run out of food and water. They made soup (one potato boiled in water) every other day. Their daily ration was Hve mouthfuls of water, then they cut it down to three, and then to two. They decided to celebrate Soviet Army Day and make “soup” with their last potato. But then Zi-ganshin suggested smoking their last cigarette that day and eating soup the next. So he rolled a cigarette and passed it round.
Gradually they grew so weak that they could no longer pump out the water; their sight was failing. The hunger and cold were almost unbearable. Yet there was no sign oi despair. They faced danger with the strength of comradeship. There never was an angry word among them and it never occurred to any one to take more than his share of food or drink.
Poplavsky, faint with hunger, used to play his accordion. How it cheered them up! But there came a day when they tore the leather ofS the accordion and boiled it in sea water. A week later they cut up the leather of their boots…
During their endless drift they had seen ships in the distance on three occasions. They signalled for help. Once it looked as if the people on the ship had seen ihem; the ship turned as though it were coming to them. But no! Bitter disappointment!
Still they did not give up their struggle.
On the forty-ninth day of the drift, lying in the cabin, too weak to move, they heard the roar of engines overhead. They looked up with unbelieving eyes: two planes were circling above them.
On March 6, some 1,600 kilometres from the Kuriles, a U. S. Navy pilot spotted a tiny barge in the rough seas with four men on deck. The pilot reported it to the commander of the aircraft carrier ftearsarge on her way to San Francisco. Helicopters were sent to pick up the men.
According to the commander’s report the rescued soldiers were the Russians who had been adrift in the Pacific for forty-nine days. The men had long hair and beards, they were faint with hunger and could hardly walk. “They expressed a strong desire to return to theip homeland,” the commander added.
In San Francisco crowds of people, press and television correspondents welcomed the heroes enthusiastically.
“How did you hold out?” they kept asking. “You must be men of a special breed.” Ziganshin said, “we are simply Soviet peopie and that is the main point.”
