The recent government announcement ofan increase in university fees for thecoming academic year has angered youngpeople planning to go to university.

Inaddition, it has caused some of them quiteunderstandably to question the value of auniversity education.



In an ideal world, university education willbe free and open to all.

However, in mostwestern countries, students do contributeto the cost of going to university, and mostaccept that they should pay somethingtowards the benefits they receive from auniversity education.

These benefitsinclude the opportunity to get good jobs inthe future, and this of course leads tohigher salaries and a more comfortablelifestyle.



But is it that simple?

It is true thatuniversity graduates may get better jobs,but this clearly means that they will thenpay higher taxes, which contribute to theeconomy of the whole country.

So, isn’tadding further increases to university feesin effect asking students to pay twice?

As itis, with the current virtually non-existentlevel of financial support in this country,students already often have to take outloans to pay for general living costs.

Thiscan result in them getting heavily intodebt.

Annie Costello, who becamePresident of the National Union ofStudents earlier this year, says that theaverage student debt already runs intothousands of pounds.

Furthermore, manystudents have to depend on their parentsto finance their education.



The intended increase in universities feeshas come at the wrong time.

It willdiscourage some students from going touniversity because they simply cannotafford it.

This is not good news for thegovernment, whose stated aim is toencourage 50 percent of young people togo on to higher education.

Already, manyyoung people are questioning the value ofa university education.

Everyone seems tohave a degree these days, they say, sowhen they graduate from university, theycannot be sure they will get a well-paidjob.

And this seems to be reality: manygraduates have to accept positions whichare not challenging or well-paid.

Therefore, the decision to raise universityfees will almost certainly affect the studentintake, leading to a drop in numbers.



The proposed increase in fees is unfair tostudents.

Many are already havingproblems dealing with debt.

There isnothing wrong with asking students tocontribute to the cost of a universityeducation, but the proposed increase istoo much.

We call on the government toreconsider their decision or risk losing ageneration of educated young people.
