Japanese encephalitis in different geomorphic unitsCluster analysis demonstrated differences in JE incidenceamong geographical environments. Among the eight geomorphicunits included in this study (Figure 1), the plateaus range from 73uto 121u east longitude and 23u to 50u north latitude, with averagealtitudes of 1000–2000 m (Table 1), with the exception of theQinghai-Tibet Plateau (average altitude, 4000–5000 m); the plainsrange from 110u to 128u east longitude and 21u to 48u northlatitude, with an average altitude of less than 200 m.Thus, the differences in JE incidence among the eightgeomorphic units during the epidemic period were determined(Table 1). There were a total of 1.2 million reported JE cases inthese geomorphic units from 1963 to 1975, most of which(85.36%) were concentrated in regions with an average altitude ofless than 50 m. The average annual JE incidence in these regionswas between 10/100000 and 25/100000. For example, Jiangsuprovince, located in the Yangtze River Plain, had an averagealtitude of less than 50 m, while the average JE incidence between1963 and 1975 was 22.14/100000 (Table 1). In contrast, regionswith average altitudes of 1000–2000 m had fewer JE cases andlower JE incidence. For example, the average JE incidencebetween 1963 and 1975 in Yunnan and Guizhou, located in theYunnan-Guizhou Plateau, was 4.09/100000 and 4.54/100000,respectively (Table 1). Moreover, there were no reported JE casesin regions with average altitudes of greater than 2000 m, includingQinghai and Tibet. From the perspective of geographic coordi-nates, the JE cases were distributed mostly between 21u–40u northlatitude and 110u–121u east longitude (Table 1, Figure 1). Inaddition, the northern regions of 40u north latitude had lower JEincidence rates and the western regions of 100u east longitude hadno reported JE cases. The numbers of reported JE cases in Table 1 indicated that theJE epidemic area was distributed mainly in the plains, where thereported cases accounted for 90.57% of the total. Among theseplains, the Yangtze River Plain and the North China Plain had themost JE cases, which corresponded to the results of cluster analysisduring the natural JE epidemic period (Figure 2C). The JEincidence in the plains was markedly higher than those in theplateaus (Figure 3A). With regard to JE incidence in plateaus, there were no reported JE cases in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, andthe incidence in the Inner Mongolian Plateau was consistently lessthan 1/100000, while those in the Loess Plateau and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau were less than 10/100000. With the exception ofthe Northeast Plain, which is located at higher latitudes (40u–50unorth) and had an incidence of less than 10/100000, the JEincidence on the plains was always greater than 10/100000(Figure 3A). The JE incidence of the North China Plain, theYangtze River Plain, and the Pearl River Delta Plain was typicallybetween 20/100000 and 30/100000 at the peak of the epidemic; ahigh incidence of 40.11/100000 occurred in Guangdong, which islocated in the Pearl River Delta Plain.
