For the next three years, he fought in the wars against the French and Indians. In 1759, he resigned from the militia, married and settled down as a gentleman farmer at Mount Vernon. As a militiaman, Washington had been exposed to the arrogance of the British officers, and his experience as a planter with British commercial restrictions increased his anti-British sentiment. He became prominent in organizing resistance. A delegate to the Continental Congress, Washington was selected as commander in chief of the Continental Army in 1775. He was in charge of inexperienced and badly equipped army and had little or no support of the Congress. That is why he chose the policy of wearing the British troops down by harassing tactics. His able generalship and the French alliance brought the war to a conclusion. In October 1781 the British army surrendered.
